At least 30 participants from different institutions, including local journalists, civil society organisations, the Human Rights Commission, and human rights defenders, have completed a three-day training on human rights documentation, reporting, and advocacy in Lakes State.<\/p>\n

The training was organised by the Human Rights Division of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in collaboration with other partners.<\/p>\n

Daniel Laat Kon Ater, a facilitator, said the training brought together participants from various institutions to strengthen their skills in documenting and reporting human rights violations.<\/p>\n

He said the training would also help participants conduct advocacy and support the government in fulfilling its responsibility to protect human rights and uphold the rule of law.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe the three-day training that brought these participants together is going to help all the human rights defenders, including journalists, in sensitive reporting by making sure that human rights are protected in Lakes State and also in the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that participants discussed civic space and fundamental principles of human rights documentation to improve their daily work and engagement with authorities.<\/p>\n

The Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission in Lakes State, Mahok Malual Kodi, said the workshop reviewed key human rights principles and practices.<\/p>\n

He said participants learned about the difference between human rights violations and abuses, as well as how to document cases while protecting survivors\u2019 identities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have covered the difference between human rights violations and human rights abuses. There are so many activities that we have done, including the way to make a report from a survivor, who is the victim, without mentioning the name,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Kodi said human rights actors have a responsibility to advise authorities and communities when rights are violated.<\/p>\n

He added that participants would continue monitoring human rights situations and engaging authorities after the training.<\/p>\n

Mayak Majak Madit, a representative of the Union of Journalists in South Sudan (UJOSS), said the training, organised by UNMISS in collaboration with the Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO), focused on reporting and information gathering.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have learned the core part of the training, which is about reporting and how to get information,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Madit referred to Article 32 of the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan, which provides for access to information.<\/p>\n

He urged security personnel and government officials to allow journalists to obtain information necessary for their work.<\/p>\n

\u201cJournalists are not enemies of progress and not enemies of the population. Journalists are the voice of the voiceless,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also urged journalists and citizen reporters to verify information before publishing, particularly information obtained from social media.<\/p>\n

He encouraged reporters to protect the identities and locations of survivors in sensitive cases.<\/p>\n

Alfred Ater Ariau, a member of the Civil Society Network in Lakes State, said the training strengthened his understanding of human rights and the role of civil society in advocating for vulnerable people.<\/p>\n

He said many citizens are unaware of their rights and that civil society organisations have a responsibility to educate communities on how to claim and defend those rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are a community member, and your right is being violated in the community. You have a right to claim it. You are also a citizen of the state, and your right is being violated by the State government; it is also your responsibility to claim that right,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ariau urged citizens not to remain silent when their rights are violated, saying awareness of rights is essential to community and national development.<\/p>\n

Mabor Zechariah Mager, another participant, said the training taught him about human rights defenders, reporting channels, and procedures for documenting violations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are professional procedures to follow when trying to report human rights violations and what qualifies as a human rights violation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mager said he would use the knowledge gained to compile accurate and professional reports on human rights violations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
