Humanitarian partners have raised concerns over persistent attacks on civilian vehicles along the Torit-Magwi Road, warning that insecurity could disrupt humanitarian movements between the two towns.<\/p>\n

James Dinya, an officer with the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), has called on county and state authorities to strengthen security along the road to ensure safe and free movement of civilians and humanitarian workers.<\/p>\n

Dinya said the security concerns have forced some humanitarian partners to temporarily suspend plans to travel between Torit and Magwi.<\/p>\n

He urged local authorities to take stronger measures to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among humanitarian agencies using the road.<\/p>\n

However, Torit County Caretaker Commissioner Eddy William Ponsiano has assured humanitarian partners and the visiting UNMISS delegation that the road is under the control of government security forces.<\/p>\n

Ponsiano said the state and county authorities have taken measures to secure the route following recent incidents.<\/p>\n

He explained that communities in Chalaro have also been encouraged to take responsibility for protecting and monitoring the road in collaboration with security forces.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe incident that happened along the Torit\u2013Magwi road was just one kilometre from the checkpoint in Torit heading towards Magwi,\u201d Ponsiano said.<\/p>\n

The caretaker commissioner added that additional forces have been deployed to patrol the road and escort vehicles travelling to and from Magwi, including motorcycles.<\/p>\n

Ponsiano also attributed some of the reported attacks to severe hunger and economic hardship, saying such conditions may be pushing some armed individuals to take the law into their own hands.<\/p>\n

The authorities are now calling for continued cooperation between communities, security forces and humanitarian partners to restore confidence and ensure uninterrupted movement along the Torit\u2013Magwi corridor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
