At least 60 women from four counties in Lakes State have concluded a two-day conference in Rumbek aimed at strengthening women\u2019s leadership, peacebuilding, resilience, and inclusion in their communities.<\/p>\n

The conference brought together women from Rumbek North, Rumbek Centre, Rumbek East, and Cueibet counties under the theme \u201cStrengthening Women’s Leadership Together for Peace and Resilience.”<\/p>\n

The event was organised through the Women Peace Circles initiative, which promotes women\u2019s interaction, sharing of experiences, empowerment, and participation in peacebuilding.<\/p>\n

The program, called Bridges of Peace, was funded by the Agency for Development Cooperation SWISS and the Peacebuilding Opportunity Fund (POF) and implemented by Peace Canal and TOCH organisations in Lakes and Warrap states.<\/p>\n

Angelina Ding Mario, Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare in Lakes State, said Peace Canal and TOCH had mobilised women from the ministry and various counties to participate in the conference.<\/p>\n

She said women and youths are important in addressing conflicts because conflicts directly affect mothers and families.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mothers are also the decision makers, and they have come up with a lot of resolutions when they go home, and they will have a briefing with other women who remained behind, including the community leaders, and they will talk about peace,” she said. \u201cPeace is very important to everybody. It needs the children to be stable so that they should be alive and do their work in peace.”<\/p>\n

Minister Angelina said the women also proposed involving neighbouring states, including Unity and Warrap, to engage youth leaders on the importance of peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeace matters a lot for Lakes State, and we have discussed a lot of issues, including agricultural activities and income-generating activities. So, we talked a lot, and when the future comes, they will be ambassadors of peace in Lakes State and South Sudan,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Peace Canal representative in Juba, Nyadow Biel Makuac, said the conference brought women together from the four counties to dialogue, share experiences, and discuss their responsibilities in peacebuilding.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll these women came together because some of them were the first time to come and interact together as women who advocate for peace in their community,” she said.<\/p>\n

Nyadow said women play an influential role in their families and communities and should therefore not be left behind in peacebuilding efforts.<\/p>\n

Ayieda Makur Mangok, a women\u2019s group representative from Tiaptiap Payam in Cueibet County, said the conference was specifically focused on peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have decided to sit down together because we have seen people are heading in the wrong direction and that we want to take an opportunity to take our home to peace,\u201d she said. \u201cPeace is the backbone of everything in life, and if you preach peace among your neighbours and the rest of the community, this is what can take people forward.”<\/p>\n

She urged the government to sit down with Dr. Riek and negotiate for peace and stability.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, when we see the situation, there is no food, and the situation is getting tougher, particularly [for us] women,” she said. \u201cWhen there is no food, our children may die of hunger, and sickness will be many, and we want to have a meaningful peace so that the situation can change for us in the country.”<\/p>\n

The Director General in the Lakes State Ministry of Peacebuilding, Zecharia Kuoi Majak, said women discussed their challenges and their role in promoting peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are assuring you as a government of Lakes State. Women will go back, and we will work with them as a government of Lakes State door-to-door,” he said.<\/p>\n

He said the women developed an action plan and committed to working together from county to county and Payam to Payam to address cattle theft and alcohol and drug abuse among young people.<\/p>\n

Ayor Achol Kuer, a participant representative, said the women also discussed youth-related issues, cattle-related conflicts, alcohol abuse, and street children.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have discussed all these issues so that women are also part of solving conflicts in the community,” she said. \u201cThe women’s participation will allow people to have peace and freedom of movement.”<\/p>\n

She added that the women would return to their communities to raise awareness and promote peace.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
