The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that more than 7.8 million people are facing acute food insecurity in South Sudan, as humanitarian needs continue to rise and resources for assistance remain severely stretched.<\/p>\n

The warning comes as Japan provides JPY 350 million, approximately US$2.2 million, to support WFP\u2019s humanitarian operations in the country.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the signing ceremony, WFP South Sudan Country Director Mutinta Chimuka said that the contribution comes at a critical time, with millions of people struggling to access sufficient food while malnutrition among women and children remains a serious concern.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe humanitarian situation in South Sudan remains extremely difficult. More than 7.8 million people are facing acute food insecurity, and malnutrition among women and children remains a serious concern,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

According to Chimuka, Japan\u2019s support will enable the organisation to provide critical nutrition assistance to more than 38,000 women and children living in some of the hardest-hit communities across South Sudan.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will help us treat pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls suffering from acute malnutrition,” she stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will also help us prevent malnutrition among mothers and young children before their condition becomes more serious,” Chimuka added.<\/p>\n

The program will target communities in Jonglei, Upper Nile, Unity, Warrap, and Greater Bahr el Ghazal, where humanitarian needs remain particularly high.<\/p>\n

She described Japan\u2019s contribution as a lifeline for vulnerable communities at a time when millions of South Sudanese are facing severe hunger and humanitarian resources are reaching their limits.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery contribution matters,\u201d Chimuka said, noting that additional funding allows humanitarian agencies to reach people who might otherwise be left without urgently needed assistance.<\/p>\n

Japan has maintained a longstanding partnership with WFP in South Sudan. With the latest contribution, Japan\u2019s total support to WFP operations in the country has exceeded US$37.7 million since 2021.<\/p>\n

She underscored that Japan\u2019s assistance has supported not only immediate humanitarian responses but also longer-term efforts aimed at addressing the causes and consequences of hunger and malnutrition.<\/p>\n

Chimuka stressed that the scale of the humanitarian crisis requires collective action, saying no single organisation or partner can address the challenges alone.<\/p>\n

She further added that WFP\u2019s ability to assist vulnerable communities depends on strong partnerships with the government of South Sudan, international partners such as Japan, and organisations working directly with affected communities.<\/p>\n

Despite the latest contribution, Chimuka stated that WFP still needed support as humanitarian needs remain high and available resources continue to decline.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Hiromoto Oyama, Charg\u00e9 d\u2019Affaires ad interim of Japan to the Republic of South Sudan, said that conflict, displacement, flooding, rising food prices, disaster outbreaks, and disease outbreaks continue to deepen the crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cSevere funding shortages are threatening the continuity of essential nutrition services. Without urgent support, more than 222,000 children and pregnant and breastfeeding women could lose access to humanitarian assistance from October. Those vulnerable children and mothers are in dire need of timely intervention to save them from severe malnutrition and loss of life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Oyama underscored that this support reflects Japan’s commitment to human security, which means protecting the life, dignity, and future of each individual.<\/p>\n

On his part, William Chan Achuil, undersecretary in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, emphasised that the generous support will help the WFP provide nutritious food and address food insecurity and malnutrition among vulnerable people.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis contribution is more than financial assistance. It is a strong expression of the friendship and solidarity between the people of Japan and the people of South Sudan.
