Northern Bahr El Ghazal\u2019s State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with international partners such as the World Health Organisation, has begun distributing antivenom vaccines to the five counties of the Northern Bahr El Ghazal state.<\/p>\n

According to the health education focal point in Aweil State Hospital, Luka Lual Aleu Jok, the distribution of the assignment follows reports of deaths caused by snake bites both in rural and urban settings.<\/p>\n

Lual said the county health directors, including the Aweil Civil Hospital health officials, have mulled over the intensity of the snakebite issue across the state, saying they have managed to receive the 400 doses of the anti-venom, which are being distributed to the counties.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have managed to get 400 vaccines of the anti-venom, and therefore, the 5 counties such as Aweil Center, West, South, North, [and] East County directors have come together and decided to share the doses given in order to save lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Aleu said they have so far recorded more than 64 cases of snake bites, which raised anxieties and made them appeal for the vaccines to be made available.<\/p>\n

\u201cWHO and other partners have been engaged, as we have so far found that the issue of snakebite is becoming constant, especially in rural areas, as we have recorded 64 cases since the beginning of this year,” he noted.<\/p>\n

He said that among the recorded cases, two people have died of the bite and called on the local communities to be vigilant as a result of the snake bites.<\/p>\n

Medics attribute the rise in cases of negligence and also lack of quick response from residents once a person has come into contact with the serpent to some local methods being taken, such as the use of an egg to be inhaled by the patient, a method that makes the person vomit. All such methods are being nullified by the medics.<\/p>\n
