{"id":47303,"date":"2026-08-27T17:38:15","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T15:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=47303"},"modified":"2026-08-27T17:38:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T15:38:15","slug":"over-30-south-sudanese-refugees-arrested-after-riots-at-imvepi-settlement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/27\/over-30-south-sudanese-refugees-arrested-after-riots-at-imvepi-settlement\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 30 South Sudanese refugees arrested after riots at Imvepi Settlement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Louis Loku<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ugandan police have arrested 37 South Sudanese refugees following violent protests at the Imvepi Refugee Settlement in north-western Uganda that left two refugees dead and two police officers injured, authorities said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The unrest reportedly erupted after a candidate contesting for a position on the Refugee Welfare Council was disqualified from participating in the election.<\/p>\n<p>According to police, supporters of the disqualified candidate became angry and allegedly stormed and set fire to offices belonging to Uganda\u2019s Office of the Prime Minister, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), and other properties within the settlement.<\/p>\n<p>Josephine Angucia, spokesperson for Uganda\u2019s West Nile Regional Police, said security forces had been deployed to Imvepi to restore calm and prevent further violence.<\/p>\n<p>She said the Refugee Welfare Council elections scheduled for Wednesday had been suspended indefinitely following the unrest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation is under control, but security personnel remain deployed in the settlement to ensure there is no further violence,\u201d Angucia said.<\/p>\n<p>The violence has raised fresh concerns over security and tensions within refugee settlements, where disputes over leadership and representation can quickly escalate.<\/p>\n<p>The Imvepi Refugee Settlement hosts thousands of refugees, most of them South Sudanese who fled conflict and insecurity in their home country.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the violence and the circumstances surrounding the deaths and destruction of property.<\/p>\n<p>The arrested refugees remain in police custody as investigations continue, while efforts are underway to restore normalcy in the settlement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Louis Loku Ugandan police have arrested 37 South Sudanese refugees following violent protests at the Imvepi Refugee Settlement in north-western Uganda that left two refugees dead and two police officers injured, authorities said Wednesday.
