South Sudan and Kenya have agreed to mobilise resources for the construction of the Juba to Torit and Nadapal Highway, a major regional infrastructure project expected to strengthen trade links between the two countries and provide the country with improved access to the Port of Mombasa.<\/p>\n

In a statement by the National Ministry of Roads and Bridges on Tuesday, Minister Peter Lam Both announced the arrangement shortly after arriving at Juba International Airport from Nairobi, where he participated in a high-level bilateral meeting between officials from South Sudan and Kenya.<\/p>\n

Lam Both said the two governments had reached an understanding on the need to jointly mobilise resources to support the construction of the strategic highway, which he described as a lifeline for South Sudan’s economy and regional connectivity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe proposed road will link Juba through Torit to Nadapal at the Kenya\u2013South Sudan border, creating a crucial transport corridor connecting the country to Kenya and onward to the Port of Mombasa,\u201d the statement partly read.<\/p>\n

The highway is expected to ease the movement of goods and people, reduce transportation costs, and improve access to regional markets.<\/p>\n

\u201cSouth Sudan currently relies heavily on neighbouring countries for the importation of essential commodities and other goods,” the statement continued.<\/p>\n

The minister said the discussions in Nairobi also focused on strengthening broader cooperation between Juba and Nairobi, including addressing concerns related to the common border between the two countries.<\/p>\n

According to Lam Both, the two governments agreed to reactivate a committee previously formed by President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Kenyan President William Ruto to examine and address issues concerning the shared frontier.<\/p>\n

He said the reactivation of the committee would provide an opportunity for the two countries to resolve outstanding border concerns through dialogue and cooperation.<\/p>\n

The latest discussions underline renewed efforts by South Sudan and Kenya to deepen bilateral relations and promote regional integration through improved infrastructure, trade and cooperation on cross-border matters.<\/p>\n

If completed, the Juba-Torit-Nadapal Highway is expected to become one of South Sudan’s most important international transport routes, providing a more reliable connection to Kenya and the East African coast.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, Gabriel Makur Amour, concluded his official visit to Nimule by inspecting the condition of the highway from Nimule to Juba, the head of the rehabilitation program that is expected to commence in the near future.<\/p>\n
