The public must have confidence that the money in circulation is properly managed, secure, available when needed, and protected against practices that can undermine its value.

Through the agreement, De La Rue is expected to provide specialised technical expertise in currency planning, forecasting, quality management, and circulation.

This could help the Bank of South Sudan improve the way it manages the entire lifecycle of the national currency. Better forecasting, for example, can help authorities determine how much currency is needed in different parts of the country.

Improved quality management can ensure that damaged and worn-out notes are properly withdrawn and replaced, while stronger systems can improve the security and integrity of currency circulation.

Such reforms are welcome. For years, many South Sudanese have expressed concerns about the weakening value of the pound, the rising cost of living, and difficulties in accessing reliable financial services.

Therefore, any partnership aimed at strengthening the monetary system should ultimately produce results that ordinary citizens can feel.

However, South Sudan must understand that a currency management agreement alone cannot solve all the country’s economic problems.

The strength of a national currency depends on much more than the printing and circulation of banknotes.

It is also influenced by government spending, inflation, foreign exchange reserves, oil revenues, domestic production, imports, public confidence, and the independence and effectiveness of monetary institutions.

The government must therefore avoid presenting the agreement as a miracle solution. De La Rue can provide technical expertise and international experience, but the responsibility for managing South Sudan’s economy remains firmly with the country’s institutions and leaders.

The Bank of South Sudan and the Ministry of Finance must use this opportunity to strengthen coordination, improve transparency, and build the technical capacity of South Sudanese professionals.

The partnership should not create permanent dependence on foreign expertise. Instead, it must transfer knowledge and leave behind a sustainable currency management system run effectively by South Sudanese institutions.

Most importantly, the government should explain clearly to the public what the agreement means and what improvements are expected.

Citizens deserve to know how the partnership will contribute to a more secure, reliable, and efficiently managed currency.

The signing of the MoU is therefore a positive step, but its real value will be measured by implementation.

If accompanied by disciplined fiscal policies, sound monetary decisions, increased production, and stronger institutions, the partnership could contribute to a healthier monetary system.

God protect South Sudan.

Be the spectator!

The Government of South Sudan’s decision to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with De La Rue on currency management has raised an important question: Will this partnership genuinely strengthen the country’s monetary system and restore public confidence in the South Sudanese Pound?
