International non-governmental organisations (INGOs), in collaboration with the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC), have launched an assessment to determine the extent of crop losses caused by a prolonged dry spell across the state.<\/p>\n

The assessment comes amid growing concerns over food insecurity, as poor rainfall has affected agricultural production in several areas, leaving crops withering in the fields.<\/p>\n

The Acting Chairperson of the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State RRC, Gabriel Bol Dut, said officials have observed serious dry conditions in different parts of the state, warning that the situation could contribute to severe food shortages if urgent action is not taken.<\/p>\n

Dut said the RRC has been engaging international humanitarian partners to assess the level of food deficit and determine the potential impact of the crop losses on vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is more likely that our people are going to suffer, and as such, we have to do more in order to brainstorm what to do about the food insecurity,\u201d Dut said.<\/p>\n

He said his recent visits to Aweil East and Aweil South counties showed that farmers in some areas have already lost significant portions of their crops because of the prolonged lack of rainfall.<\/p>\n

\u201cI recently visited areas which were reportedly mentioned to be suffering from the dry spell, especially in Malual-Baai Payam, and we witnessed it ourselves. The same applies to Aweil South County,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

According to Dut, the assessment teams will visit selected communities to gather firsthand information about the effects of the dry spell and understand the challenges facing affected households.<\/p>\n

He said the international NGOs have agreed to prioritise areas identified as the most affected. In each payam, assessment teams may select three locations whose conditions could provide an indication of the situation across the wider county.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe INGOs have accepted to choose the areas that are confirmed to them as most affected. In a payam, they can choose three areas, and those areas can represent the entire county,\u201d Dut said.<\/p>\n

Dut added that the authorities are seeking ways to support vulnerable families, including through cash-based assistance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe international NGOs have their staff moving in the market to get the prices, and they are going to see what can be done to support our people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He described the dry spell as a concern affecting communities across all five counties of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, saying the failure of crops could further increase pressure on already food-insecure households.<\/p>\n

The RRC attributed the poor harvest mainly to inadequate rainfall, which has affected crop growth and reduced agricultural production.<\/p>\n

Officials have also raised broader environmental concerns, including widespread tree cutting and deforestation.<\/p>\n

They say limited awareness of the environmental consequences of tree cutting could be contributing to changes in local climatic conditions.<\/p>\n

The ongoing assessment is expected to provide humanitarian organisations and state authorities with information on the scale of crop losses and help guide possible interventions to support communities affected by the prolonged dry spell.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
