A temporary court has opened inside the Bentiu internally displaced persons\u2019 camp as authorities move to improve access to justice and strengthen efforts to tackle crime and violence affecting displaced communities.<\/p>\n

The court, which began operations on September 7 and will run until September 26, is supported by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the Unity State Government, the Judiciary of South Sudan, and the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.<\/p>\n

According to Sudan Post, the court will handle cases involving sexual and gender-based violence, drug-related offenses, and gang violence.<\/p>\n

The deployment follows repeated calls from residents for stronger justice and rule-of-law mechanisms, particularly to protect children and young people from violence and drug-related activities.<\/p>\n

The report quoted the United Nations as saying the court will \u201cbring the formal justice system directly to residents of the IDP camp\u201d and provide an opportunity for serious offenses to be investigated and adjudicated.<\/p>\n

The court is part of an initiative of the Unity State Government\u2019s Task Force on Combating Drug Abuse and Gang Violence, which brings together security, justice, and health institutions.<\/p>\n

The Bentiu IDP camp, South Sudan\u2019s largest camp for internally displaced people, hosts more than 100,000 people. It was established as a Protection of Civilians site following the outbreak of conflict in 2013 before being redesignated as an IDP camp in 2021.<\/p>\n

The opening of the court comes after the re-establishment of the judiciary in Unity State in May 2026, following 13 years without a functioning permanent judicial and prosecutorial system in the state.<\/p>\n

Since 2024, UNMISS has supported the deployment of seven mobile courts across Unity State, including in Southern Unity and Mayom.<\/p>\n

According to the report, the mobile courts have so far adjudicated 517 cases, following a period when no cases were adjudicated through the formal justice system in Unity State in 2023.<\/p>\n

The latest court is therefore being viewed as an important step toward improving accountability, reducing impunity, and strengthening access to justice for communities affected by displacement and conflict.<\/p>\n

The court will operate in cooperation with the Community High Committee of the Bentiu IDP Camp, which has raised concerns over drug use, gang violence, and sexual and gender-based violence in the camp.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
