Around 1,000 people displaced by conflict in 2016 have been allowed to rebuild their lives after relocating to the Khor Malang resettlement site outside Wau in Western Bahr El Ghazal State.<\/p>\n

The resettlement site was highlighted during a two-day visit by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Anita Kiki Gbeho.<\/p>\n

For residents who spent more than a decade in displacement camps, the new settlement has provided access to land and space to build homes, farm, and establish livelihoods.<\/p>\n

Mama Juliet Edward Zamoi, a women\u2019s representative at the site, said life in the displacement camp had been difficult due to limited space and land.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe spent more than 10 years in a displacement camp, where there was not enough land or space for people to live, work, sit, and eat together,\u201d Mama Juliet said.<\/p>\n

The Khor Malang project was developed through cooperation between the South Sudanese government, UNMISS, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), other UN agencies, and the Government of Norway.<\/p>\n

Under the partnership, the government provided the land, while UNMAS cleared the area of unexploded ordnance and other explosive hazards. UN agencies and UNMISS supported the construction of shelters, roads, and essential services, with funding provided by Norway.<\/p>\n

Kiki described the project as an example of what can be achieved when communities, government, and international partners work together to support vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a demonstration of what happens when we work together as a community,\u201d Gbeho said.<\/p>\n

She added that meeting residents and listening to their experiences would help UNMISS and its partners draw lessons for similar initiatives in the future.<\/p>\n

The project has also brought people from different communities together in one settlement, with residents saying they are being treated equally regardless of their ethnic background.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no differentiation. All of us are treated equally. No particular tribe is treated better than another,\u201d Mama Juliet said.<\/p>\n

During her visit, Gbeho also met Western Bahr El Ghazal Deputy Governor Achom Edward Dimo and members of the State Cabinet to discuss security, civilian protection, and efforts to sustain peace through dialogue.<\/p>\n

Kiki said discussions focused on measures to maintain peace in the state and strengthen cooperation with UNMISS, particularly in protecting civilians.<\/p>\n

Deputy Governor Dimo reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with UNMISS and ensuring the mission has access to locations where its presence is needed.<\/p>\n

The Khor Malang experience demonstrates how cooperation in mine action, resettlement, infrastructure development, and community engagement can help displaced families transition from prolonged displacement toward safer and more stable lives.<\/p>\n

It also highlights the importance of continued collaboration between government, communities, and international partners in strengthening civilian protection and sustaining peace in South Sudan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
