In a crucial move to address the nation\u2019s growing agricultural crisis, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Clement Juma Mbugoniwia, briefed the Standing Committee at the Transitional National Legislative Assembly TNLA on the current status of agriculture and food security in the country.<\/p>\n

According to the ministry press unit, he was accompanied by Evans Kenyi, Technical Adviser in the Ministry, and Dr. Micheal Roberto Kenyi, Undersecretary for Agriculture and Food Security<\/p>\n

The meeting, which was held at the committee\u2019s office, was convened at the request of the Committee Chairman, Ceaser Bayeh Layalala.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the briefing, Minister Juma provided lawmakers with a comprehensive update on the current state of the agriculture sector, highlighting the severe challenges facing farmers across the country,” the statement partly read.<\/p>\n

He noted that the sector is currently grappling with erratic rainfall, dry spells and persistent insecurity in some parts of the country, which have significantly hampered farming activities and threatened food production.<\/p>\n

In response to the challenges facing the agriculture sector, South Sudan\u2019s agriculture minister has outlined a strategic roadmap aimed at mitigating the crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe minister said his ministry is actively working on organising farmers into cooperative associations so they can benefit from government support,” the statement continued.<\/p>\n

He added that the ministry is also pushing to transform the country\u2019s agriculture sector into a more modern and mechanised system capable of competing with regions that have stronger agricultural skills.<\/p>\n

The minister reaffirmed the government\u2019s commitment to steering South Sudan toward food security and eventual food independence.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Juma also briefed the specialised committee on his recent assessment tours to Northern Bahr El Gazal, Aweil, and Renk in Upper Nile State.<\/p>\n

He detailed the agricultural activities observed in these areas and the specific challenges farmers are facing on the ground.<\/p>\n

The minister concluded by informing the lawmakers of his plans to visit other states in the near future.<\/p>\n

He stated that these tours are intended to personally assess the agricultural situation across the country and ensure that the ministry\u2019s strategies are effectively addressing local needs.<\/p>\n
