President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed authorities in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area to regulate mining activities in Raad, a mineral-rich border town where gold mining has expanded in recent years.<\/p>\n

The directive was issued on Wednesday after Greater Pibor Chief Administrator Gola Boyoi Gola briefed the President on mining operations, security, and recent tensions involving Murle age-set groups.<\/p>\n

Gola suspended gold mining activities in Raad in July to allow authorities to identify companies operating without proper licenses and government authorisation, including some Ethiopian-owned firms.<\/p>\n

In his briefing, Gola told President Kiir that mining activities remain temporarily suspended as consultations continue to establish a legal and administrative framework to regulate the sector.<\/p>\n

President Kiir said regulation should ensure that both the national government and local communities benefit from the country\u2019s natural resources while improving transparency and government revenues.<\/p>\n

The president also directed security institutions to strengthen measures aimed at maintaining peace and stability in Greater Pibor.<\/p>\n

Raad is located in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, an area known for its mineral resources and recurrent security challenges. The expansion of mining activities has raised concerns over licensing, government oversight, community benefits, and security.<\/p>\n

Authorities have previously moved to suspend some mining operations as part of efforts to establish clearer controls over companies operating in the area.<\/p>\n

President Kiir also urged young people in Greater Pibor to promote peaceful coexistence and dialogue and avoid actions that could fuel tensions between communities.<\/p>\n
