The government must therefore strengthen the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management to ensure it can respond quickly when emergencies occur.<\/p>\n
Drought should not be treated as a crisis that begins only when communities run out of water and food.<\/p>\n
The ministry needs stronger early-warning systems to identify emerging drought conditions and coordinate timely interventions before the situation becomes severe.<\/p>\n
This requires adequate funding, trained personnel, transportation, communication equipment, and other resources necessary for reaching vulnerable communities across the country.<\/p>\n
A well-equipped ministry would also improve coordination between government institutions, humanitarian organisations, state authorities, and local communities during emergencies.<\/p>\n
Water must remain a major priority in any drought response. Communities need reliable access to safe water for drinking and livestock.<\/p>\n
The government should invest in boreholes, water storage facilities, and other infrastructure that can help communities withstand prolonged dry periods.<\/p>\n
Drought also threatens livestock, which remains an important source of food and income for many families across South Sudan.<\/p>\n
Veterinary services, animal health campaigns, and additional water points should therefore form part of the government’s drought preparedness and response plans.<\/p>\n
At the same time, emergency food assistance must reach vulnerable households while longer-term programs help communities become more resilient to future shocks.<\/p>\n
Strengthening the ministry should also include stronger transparency and accountability to ensure humanitarian resources reach the people who need them most.<\/p>\n
The government cannot prevent drought, but it can reduce its devastating effects through preparedness, planning, and rapid intervention.<\/p>\n
Waiting for humanitarian emergencies to become severe places additional pressure on communities, humanitarian organisations and government institutions.<\/p>\n
