Residents of Twic County in Warrap State have urged politicians seeking votes in the upcoming elections to prioritise the construction and rehabilitation of roads in the county.<\/p>\n

The residents issued the appeal as political parties and candidates prepare to engage communities ahead of the elections.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the burial of a late chief in Turalei Payam, one of the paramount chiefs, Chier Ryan Ayuel, said politicians should not seek votes from people in remote areas without addressing the challenges affecting their communities.<\/p>\n

Chief Chier said poor road conditions made it difficult for residents and visitors to access some areas of the county, particularly during emergencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I was on my way to this late chief\u2019s dignified burial, I found it hard to reach here because the roads are cut off. So, I am appealing to you on behalf of others that you can\u2019t get votes from the local people in the far-flung areas and later disappear into the towns without being asked for what you promised,\u201d Chief Chier said.<\/p>\n

He challenged politicians to demonstrate their commitment to development before asking communities for electoral support.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is imperative that you start first by showing us what you want to give to us before we give you votes,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The paramount chief said poor roads affect access to Payam and county headquarters, putting residents at greater risk when medical and other emergencies occur.<\/p>\n

He also linked poor road infrastructure to insecurity, saying difficulties in accessing remote areas can complicate efforts to respond to conflicts between neighbouring communities.<\/p>\n

Responding to the concerns, Mangok Kom Nyuol, who was the commissioner of Twic County at the time of the remarks, said improving services requires cooperation between local authorities and communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a work of both the local authorities and the civilians, such as contributing the hut tax, so that we put them together for the betterment of services that we need,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Nyuol acknowledged the responsibility of local authorities while also urging communities to contribute toward improving services.<\/p>\n

With elections approaching, residents say they want politicians to address practical development needs, including roads, before seeking their support at the grassroots.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
