{"id":48215,"date":"2026-09-24T13:44:53","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T11:44:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=48215"},"modified":"2026-09-24T13:44:53","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T11:44:53","slug":"special-court-dr-machar-trial-adjourned-to-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/24\/special-court-dr-machar-trial-adjourned-to-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"SPECIAL COURT: Dr Machar trial adjourned to Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Yiep Joseph<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The trial of Dr. Riek Machar and seven co-accused has been adjourned to Friday after the prosecution submitted a written response.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution\u2019s response addressed concerns raised over reported threats to the safety of defense lawyers and the eight accused persons.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding Judge Dr. James Alala Deng said the court is interrogating the reported threats as it considers the issues raised during the proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Following the prosecution\u2019s submission, the defense team requested an opportunity to comment on the response in writing.<\/p>\n<p>The defense said it should be given time to study the prosecution\u2019s response and provide its position before the court proceeds further.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Stephen Simon subsequently adjourned the session to Friday, September 25, 2026, when the defense is expected to respond to the prosecution\u2019s submission.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Riek Machar, South Sudan\u2019s former First Vice President and leader of the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Movement-In Opposition, is among eight people facing trial in the case.<\/p>\n<p>The proceedings have attracted significant public attention because of Machar\u2019s prominent political role and his involvement in South Sudan\u2019s peace process.<\/p>\n<p>The charges and allegations against the accused remain matters for determination by the court, and all accused persons are entitled to due process and a fair hearing.<\/p>\n<p>The next hearing on Friday is expected to allow the defense to formally respond to the prosecution\u2019s written submission before the court considers the way forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Yiep Joseph The trial of Dr. Riek Machar and seven co-accused has been adjourned to Friday after the prosecution submitted a written response.
