South Sudan has launched national consultations on the proposed political confederation within the East African Community (EAC), with the government calling on citizens to actively participate and present their views.<\/p>\n

Undersecretary in the Ministry of East African Community Affairs, Kawaja Kau Madol, made the remarks during a press conference while receiving the high-level EAC delegation that arrived in Juba ahead of the consultations.<\/p>\n

Kawaja said the delegation is led by the EAC Secretary General, Ambassador Annette Ssemuwemba, and includes former Kenyan Attorney General Amos Wako, among other regional officials and experts.<\/p>\n

He said the national consultation would begin in Juba with the national government before moving to selected states.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know this exercise that we’ve been talking about here in South Sudan is going to start in Juba. From tomorrow, the consultation will start with the federal government until the 27th, and then afterwards we’ll go to states,\u201d Kawaja said.<\/p>\n

He identified Central Equatoria, Lakes, Western Bahr el Ghazal, and Jonglei as the four states targeted for consultations.<\/p>\n

According to the undersecretary, the consultations will focus on key questions surrounding the proposed confederation, including constitutional arrangements, funding, governance structures, and decision-making mechanisms.<\/p>\n

He urged South Sudanese to take advantage of the consultation process to express their views on the kind of EAC and confederation arrangement they want.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to take this opportunity to urge South Sudanese to fully participate in expressing their views on what kind of EAC they want, what kind of confederation they want, and what are the issues they feel should actually be addressed in this consultation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Kawaja emphasised that South Sudan\u2019s membership in the regional bloc makes public participation important in shaping discussions about its future relationship with the EAC.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur views must always count, and our views will only count when we are participating. So, I’m requesting South Sudanese to turn out in numbers and seize this opportunity to participate in this national consultation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He said the consultations will involve a broad range of stakeholders, including the presidency, executive, parliament, academia, civil society organisations, youth, religious leaders, and political parties.<\/p>\n

The undersecretary described the exercise as a high-level regional engagement involving experts from the EAC member states.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis exercise is not a small exercise. It is a big exercise that we need our people to take seriously and then come out and express their views,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The consultations are expected to provide a platform for South Sudanese to discuss the implications, opportunities, and concerns surrounding the proposed political confederation within the regional bloc.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
