{"id":48289,"date":"2026-09-28T15:05:06","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T13:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=48289"},"modified":"2026-09-28T15:09:58","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T13:09:58","slug":"south-sudan-mourns-veteran-commander-liwa-john-hakim-elia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/28\/south-sudan-mourns-veteran-commander-liwa-john-hakim-elia\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudan mourns veteran commander Liwa John Hakim Elia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By James Innocent<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>South Sudan is mourning the death of Liwa John Hakim Elia, a veteran military officer and former liberation fighter widely known as \u201cJohn Commander\u201d or \u201cOmoyo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u200eLiwa John Hakim Elia served during South Sudan\u2019s liberation struggle and later continued his service in the country\u2019s national army, contributing to military affairs and national service.<\/p>\n<p>\u200eHe also served as Director of the Signal Corps at Bilpam, the headquarters of the South Sudan People\u2019s Defence Forces in Juba, under the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u200eThose mourning his death remember him for his commitment to service, discipline, courage, and leadership, as well as for his contribution to the liberation struggle and the development of South Sudan\u2019s military institutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u200eHis death is being mourned by family members, colleagues, former comrades, and members of the wider community in Yei River County and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>\u200e\u201cHis passing is a great loss to our family, colleagues, comrades, and the people of South Sudan. His legacy of service and sacrifice will remain an important part of our history,\u201d the family said.<\/p>\n<p>\u200eThe family has also described him as a mentor and father whose guidance and affection left a lasting impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u200e\u201cYou have been my mentor, father, and, above all, a loving king.
