The former Commissioner of Aweil West County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Stephen Wieu, has died in Aweil Town after a prolonged illness.<\/p>\n

Wieu, who previously served as commissioner during the former state administrative system, passed away early Sunday, according to information obtained by the No. 1 Citizen Daily English Newspaper.<\/p>\n

Chol Duang, Information Director in the Office of the Aweil West County Commissioner, confirmed Wieu\u2019s death, saying the former county administrator had battled an illness for some time and had sought medical treatment, including in Juba, before returning to Aweil.<\/p>\n

\u201cStephen Wieu passed away early Sunday. He had been ill for some time and was taken to Juba for medical attention before he was eventually brought back to Aweil,\u201d Duang said.<\/p>\n

According to Duang, Wieu\u2019s remains were laid to rest on Sunday at Udhum village in Mariem East Payam, his ancestral home.<\/p>\n

He described the late former commissioner as an influential political figure who remained active in national politics and had played a significant role in the administration of Aweil West County.<\/p>\n

Duang said Wieu was particularly remembered by members of the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Movement in Opposition, where he had been politically active.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a determined individual who was active in politics and served Aweil West County during the former state system. His contribution is deeply remembered by the people he served,\u201d Duang said.<\/p>\n

Questions remain, however, over the exact cause of Wieu\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

Duang said preliminary information from the family indicated that Wieu had experienced symptoms that were reportedly similar to those associated with an ulcer and severe body heat. However, he stressed that there had been no publicly confirmed medical diagnosis establishing the exact illness that claimed his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis brother said the medical reports did not provide a clear diagnosis of the actual ailment he had been suffering from. There were reportedly no signs of hepatitis or other infections. The family took him to Juba for treatment before he was returned to Aweil,\u201d Duang said.<\/p>\n

Residents who knew Wieu have also mourned his death, describing him as a fearless political figure who stood against what he considered oppression affecting his community.<\/p>\n

His death has been described as a loss to both the political community and residents of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.<\/p>\n

Funeral services and commemorations were expected to provide an opportunity for family members, political colleagues, local authorities, and residents to honour Wieu and reflect on his years of public service.<\/p>\n
