{"id":48432,"date":"2026-10-01T17:43:38","date_gmt":"2026-10-01T15:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=48432"},"modified":"2026-10-01T17:43:38","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T15:43:38","slug":"au-c5-igad-urges-south-sudan-to-speed-up-remaining-steps-towards-conduct-of-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/01\/au-c5-igad-urges-south-sudan-to-speed-up-remaining-steps-towards-conduct-of-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"AU C5 IGAD urges South Sudan to speed up remaining steps towards conduct of elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Lodu William Odiya<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The African Union High-Level Ad Hoc Committee on South Sudan, known as the C5, and IGAD leaders have urged South Sudan\u2019s political leaders to expedite the remaining processes critical for the successful conduct of the planned December 2026 general elections.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement that was released by the presidential press unit on Tuesday, the call came during a virtual meeting bringing together representatives of the AU C5 member states and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to assess South Sudan\u2019s preparedness for the elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe virtual meeting was chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who urged South Sudan\u2019s leaders to seize the opportunity to reach political consensus through the ongoing Inter-Party Dialogue on Elections Related Matters,&#8221; the statement partly read.<\/p>\n<p>According to the press unit, Kiir, while addressing the meeting, thanked the C5 and the AU Peace and Security Council for their continued support for the electoral process, saying his administration had taken concrete steps to prepare for the December polls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Kiir pointed to the already established legal framework intended to facilitate the successful conduct of the elections while reaffirming ongoing efforts to heighten the preparations,&#8221; the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting also assessed South Sudan\u2019s overall level of electoral preparedness, with particular focus on the political and institutional challenges that should be speedily resolved before the conduct of the elections.<\/p>\n<p>The C5 member states include South Africa, Algeria, Chad, Nigeria, and Rwanda, and it serves as an African Union mechanism supporting efforts to advance peace, stability, and the implementation of the peace process in South Sudan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Lodu William Odiya The African Union High-Level Ad Hoc Committee on South Sudan, known as the C5, and IGAD leaders have urged South Sudan\u2019s political leaders to expedite the remaining processes critical for the successful conduct of the planned December 2026 general elections.
