However, for the process to have lasting value, it must go beyond speeches, statements, and political commitments. It should produce clear, practical, and implementable recommendations.

For many years, South Sudanese citizens have heard political leaders make commitments to peace, democracy, governance, and development. Yet, the gap between political agreements and implementation remains a major concern.

The success of any new dialogue should therefore be measured not by the number of meetings held, but by what is actually implemented afterwards.

The parties should agree on recommendations with clear responsibilities, timelines, and progress-monitoring mechanisms. Each recommendation should identify who is responsible for implementation, what resources are required, and when the expected results should be delivered.

The dialogue should also address issues that directly affect ordinary citizens. These include strengthening peace and security, improving public services, promoting accountable governance, supporting economic recovery, and creating an environment where political differences can be resolved peacefully.

Political parties should further commit themselves to respecting democratic institutions and using dialogue rather than confrontation to resolve disagreements. There should be practical measures to strengthen trust among political actors and between political leaders and citizens.

Most importantly, the recommendations should not remain on paper. A joint monitoring mechanism involving political parties, civil society, and other relevant stakeholders could help track implementation and publicly report on progress.

This would allow citizens to know whether their leaders are meeting the commitments they make. South Sudan does not lack political agreements. What the country needs is stronger implementation and accountability.

The inter-party dialogue should therefore produce a realistic action plan rather than another document of political promises. If leaders can agree on practical steps and genuinely follow through, the process could become an important contribution to peace, stability, and democratic development.

The people of South Sudan deserve more than promises. They deserve recommendations that can be implemented, measured, and felt in their daily lives.

South Sudan’s inter-party dialogue offers an important opportunity for political leaders to address the country’s challenges and build a more stable future.
