{"id":48688,"date":"2026-10-08T15:11:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-08T13:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=48688"},"modified":"2026-10-08T15:11:00","modified_gmt":"2026-10-08T13:11:00","slug":"one-in-five-people-experience-mental-health-after-conflict-says-icrc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/08\/one-in-five-people-experience-mental-health-after-conflict-says-icrc\/","title":{"rendered":"One in five people experience mental health after conflict, says ICRC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Lodu William Odiya<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Delegate in South Sudan, Joana Thiesen, has said at least one in five people experiences mental health issues after conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Her remark came during a one-day workshop organised for journalists from different media houses in Juba to raise awareness on mental health and promote responsible reporting on mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was held ahead of World Mental Health Day, which would be marked globally on Saturday, 10th October.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen people are affected, sometimes they need support, and they need to know where they can find this support. About 1 out of 5 people may have mental health conditions like depression, anxiety or go through traumatic events, and then they may develop post-traumatic stress disorder. And that\u2019s why they need support,\u201d said Joana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImpact of mental health in families leads to impaired parenting skills and fighting between relatives,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Germain Mwehu, who is the ICRC Communication Coordinator, said the workshop was designed as an exchange of experiences between the organisation and journalists ahead of the annual Mental Health Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou as journalists, for sure, know a lot when it comes to this topic, mental health. So, we are here also to learn from you,\u201d Mwehu said.<\/p>\n<p>He underscored that the engagement builds on previous workshops the organisation had held with journalists on social violence and persons with disabilities, noting that mental health remains a very important topic that requires collaboration with the media.<\/p>\n<p>War and violence destroy communities and countries all over the world and have a devastating impact on the mental health of millions of people.<\/p>\n<p>World Mental Health Day is a global observance that highlights mental health as a universal human right and calls for action to ensure everyone can access quality care.<\/p>\n<p>It draws attention to the reality that one in eight people live with a mental health condition, often facing stigma, discrimination, and inadequate treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The day also serves as a platform to raise awareness, confront systemic barriers, and promote inclusion, dignity, and community-based support worldwide.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Lodu William Odiya The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Delegate in South Sudan, Joana Thiesen, has said at least one in five people experiences mental health issues after conflict.
