The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Thursday organised a wheelchair basketball tournament in Juba to promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities through sports.<\/p>\n

The tournament brought attention to the abilities, determination, and resilience of players with disabilities, highlighting the role of sports in encouraging participation, building confidence, and strengthening social inclusion.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the end of the tournament, the Undersecretary of the National Ministry of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare, Adeng Andrew Malual Leek, praised the players for their performance and determination.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is inspiring and encouraging to witness the players\u2019 determination, talent, and resilience,\u201d Adeng said.<\/p>\n

She described the game as an inspiring activity that demonstrates how persons with disabilities can participate in sports and contribute to society when given opportunities and support.<\/p>\n

Wheelchair basketball is a form of the game adapted for athletes with physical disabilities. Like conventional basketball, it promotes teamwork, discipline, physical fitness, and competitive spirit.<\/p>\n

The ICRC\u2019s initiative highlights the importance of creating opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in sporting activities and other aspects of community life.<\/p>\n

In South Sudan, promoting inclusive sports can help challenge negative attitudes towards disability and encourage communities to recognise the talents and potential of people with physical impairments.<\/p>\n

Such activities also provide opportunities for athletes to interact, develop friendships, and demonstrate their abilities in an environment that values participation and equal opportunity.<\/p>\n

The tournament comes amid broader calls for greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in public life, including access to education, employment, healthcare, and recreational activities.<\/p>\n

Organisers and stakeholders are encouraged to sustain such initiatives to ensure that persons with disabilities have opportunities to participate in sports and other community activities.<\/p>\n
