‎Hundreds of residents have welcomed Emmanuel Taban Seme as caretaker commissioner of Yei River County in Central Equatoria State, following his reappointment after Samuel Henry Malimbo.

The reception brought together county officials, traditional leaders, youth and women’s representatives, security personnel, and media practitioners, with speakers calling for peace, unity, and public participation ahead of South Sudan’s anticipated elections.

‎Addressing the gathering, Seme urged communities to maintain peace and unity as the country prepares for the electoral process. He pledged to continue implementing the county’s existing strategic plans.

‎The commander of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) in Yei described the security situation in the area as calm, despite reports of armed activity. He also encouraged young people to join the national army, saying they could contribute to the country’s security and leadership.

‎Helen Ciama, chairperson of the Yei Women Association, called for greater cooperation among communities to promote peace and development as the country moves towards elections.

Gaga Frank Osman, chairperson of the Yei River County Youth Association, urged the government to create more employment opportunities for young people. He also welcomed Seme’s return, citing his positive relationship with the youth.

‎Yei River County Executive Director Hillary Lokudu Muhammed said residents had welcomed Seme back and urged him to build on the work of his predecessor, Malimbo.

‎Lokudu also stressed the importance of involving young people in local governance, calling for closer coordination between youth representatives and county authorities to address their concerns.

‎Caretaker Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement in Central Equatoria State, Napatali Hassan Gale, said caretaker administrations were operating within the country’s transitional political framework, established under the 2018 agreement.

‎Gale urged residents to participate in the electoral process, particularly voter registration conducted by the electoral commission.

He said citizens should exercise their right to choose their leaders through elections and encouraged communities to remain hopeful about the country’s political future.

‎He also warned against misinformation, cautioning that the spread of false information could heighten tensions and contribute to violence during the election period.

‎Gale called on residents to support peace initiatives and work collectively to maintain stability in Yei River County.

‎Seme’s return comes as county authorities and community leaders face calls to strengthen local peace efforts, address youth unemployment, and encourage public participation in preparations for the anticipated elections.
