Across the country, disputes between communities over cattle, land, water, grazing areas, and other resources continue to threaten lives, displace families, and weaken relationships that have existed for generations.

The Civil Society Coalition and the Caretaker Government must therefore prioritise dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful conflict resolution to address these persistent challenges.

South Sudan cannot achieve lasting peace while communities continue to lose lives because of unresolved disagreements. Every incident of intercommunal violence leaves behind grieving families, displaced children, destroyed property, and growing mistrust among neighbours.

Young people who should be contributing to national development are sometimes drawn into cycles of revenge that deepen divisions and make reconciliation more difficult.

The time has come for all stakeholders to move beyond condemning violence after it happens and invest more effort in preventing conflicts before they escalate.

Dialogue should not be treated as a temporary response to bloodshed but as a continuous process of building understanding, trust, and peaceful coexistence.

The Civil Society Coalition has an important role to play in bringing communities together. Civil society organisations can organise peace conferences, community dialogues, public awareness campaigns, and reconciliation meetings involving traditional leaders, women, youth, religious institutions, and local authorities.

These platforms can help communities identify the causes of disputes and agree on practical solutions before tensions turn into violence.

Traditional leaders also have a responsibility to promote peaceful settlement of disputes. Their knowledge of local customs and community relationships can help resolve disagreements, but their efforts must be supported by authorities that uphold the rule of law and protect all citizens equally.

The Caretaker Government, for its part, must demonstrate commitment through concrete action. It should strengthen early-warning systems, respond promptly to threats of violence, investigate serious crimes, and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable regardless of their community or status.

Peace agreements reached between communities must also be monitored to ensure that commitments are respected.

Security measures remain necessary where lives are at risk, but security operations alone cannot resolve the underlying causes of intercommunal conflicts. Sustainable peace requires justice, dialogue, reconciliation, responsible leadership, and equitable access to resources.

Women and young people must be included in peacebuilding initiatives because they often bear the greatest consequences of violence. Their participation can help communities develop solutions that address local grievances and prevent the recruitment of young people into cycles of revenge.

Religious leaders, schools, local authorities, and the media should also promote messages of unity and discourage hate speech, tribal hostility, and the spread of rumours that can inflame tensions.

As South Sudan continues to pursue peace and prepare for its political future, national stability must begin within communities. Elections, development projects, and public institutions cannot deliver their full benefits where citizens live in fear of attacks from neighbouring communities.

The Civil Society Coalition and the Caretaker Government must work together with communities across the country to make dialogue a priority. Peace cannot be imposed through statements alone; it must be built through action, accountability, and mutual understanding.

South Sudanese communities have more in common than the disputes that divide them. They share the same hopes for security, education, health services, and a better future for their children.

God protect South Sudan.

Be the spectator!

Intercommunal conflicts remain a serious challenge to peace, security, and development in South Sudan.
