Ordinary citizens, already struggling with economic difficulties, become the most affected.<\/p>\n
The government must therefore take practical measures to eliminate unnecessary obstacles to trade. Relevant authorities should review the operations of checkpoints, enforce transparent procedures, and hold officials accountable for illegal taxation, harassment, and demands for unofficial payments. Legitimate customs duties and taxes should be collected according to the law, without creating unnecessary difficulties for businesses.<\/p>\n
Security along the Juba\u2013Nimule Road must also be treated as a national priority. Traders, passengers, transport operators, and other road users deserve to travel without fear of robbery, ambushes, harassment, or other criminal activities.<\/p>\n
Security agencies should strengthen patrols, improve coordination, and respond quickly to reports of crime. Those responsible for attacks against road users must be investigated and brought to justice.<\/p>\n
However, security cannot be achieved through enforcement alone. The government should also address the underlying economic challenges that contribute to crime, strengthen community cooperation, and ensure that security personnel operate professionally and respect the rights of civilians.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, South Sudan should strengthen trade cooperation with Uganda and other neighbouring countries. Improved border management, efficient customs procedures, and better coordination between relevant institutions can reduce delays, encourage investment, and make cross-border commerce more reliable.<\/p>\n
The private sector also has an important role to play. Traders and transport operators should comply with the law, report illegal demands, and cooperate with authorities in identifying security threats.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, improving the Juba\u2013Nimule Road is not merely a transport issue; it is an investment in national economic recovery. A secure and efficient trade corridor can lower transportation costs, improve the availability of essential goods, create business opportunities, and strengthen regional integration.<\/p>\n
South Sudan must move beyond promises and take decisive action. By removing unnecessary trade barriers, fighting corruption, and strengthening road security, the government can create a more favourable environment for commerce and ease the economic pressure on citizens. A road that connects markets must also connect people to opportunity, affordable goods, and a better future.<\/p>\n
