The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Charles Madut Akol, has urged 22 paramount chiefs to help prepare communities for the upcoming December 2026 general elections by promoting security and voter participation.<\/p>\n

Speaking during a meeting with the traditional leaders at the State Secretariat, Akol said chiefs had an important role in mobilising communities and ensuring that eligible voters understood the importance of participating in the elections.<\/p>\n

He said the meeting was intended to prepare traditional authorities for the electoral process as the national government moves towards the planned polls.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason we are calling you is to ensure that everyone participates when the elections happen,\u201d Madut said.<\/p>\n

He urged the chiefs to help maintain peace and prevent insecurity from disrupting the electoral process, noting that Northern Bahr el Ghazal needed to preserve its peaceful environment throughout the elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring these elections, we want your participation so that you don\u2019t get disturbed due to insecurity. As we are peaceful in this state, we need it to remain as such,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

However, the governor acknowledged that food shortages and other economic challenges facing local communities could affect voter participation, as some residents might prioritise daily survival and income-generating activities over voting.<\/p>\n

He called on the chiefs to educate their communities about the importance of elections and encourage voters to make informed choices when selecting their representatives.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are on the ground, and the sons and daughters who are going to come to the grassroots looking for votes belong to you all. You know who is much better than the other to represent you in the House of Laws,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Akol urged voters to assess candidates fairly based on their qualifications and abilities to represent their constituencies, warning that competition among aspirants would be intense.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Paramount Chief of Aweil South County, Ayom Wek Ateny, appealed to the state government to address rising cases of theft and looting reported in different parts of the state.<\/p>\n

He warned that insecurity could discourage residents from participating in the elections if their homes and property remained vulnerable while they were away voting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want everyone to participate in this election, then make sure patrol units do their work as the local people go and queue and their properties will remain vulnerable to looting by thieves,\u201d Ateny said.<\/p>\n

He also called for urgent measures to address food shortages and strengthen security patrols, saying some residents were experiencing theft and robberies in broad daylight.<\/p>\n

Ateny linked the security challenges partly to unemployment, urging authorities to address the problems affecting communities ahead of the elections.<\/p>\n

The meeting comes as South Sudan prepares for the general elections scheduled for December 22, 2026, amid concerns over insecurity, economic hardship, and the need to mobilise voters across the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
