The caretaker governor of Lakes State, Rin Tueny, has urged residents to prepare for an anticipated food crisis following poor rainfall and the failure of many farmers to cultivate crops due to climate change.

Speaking during an address to newly appointed caretaker officials and members of the community, Tueny said the state was facing serious challenges linked to changing weather patterns, limited water supplies, and inadequate rainfall.

He said the rains recorded in May and June were insufficient for cultivation, raising concerns about food production and the availability of harvests this year.

“The rains that came in May and June this year were not enough for cultivation. So, there is nothing to be harvested this year, and this will contribute directly to hunger and food insecurity among our citizens in Lakes State,” Tueny said.

The governor urged households to begin seeking ways to secure food before the situation worsens, cautioning residents against relying entirely on government assistance and humanitarian agencies.

“Our message to our people is to look for food for themselves as individuals, and as a head of family, you start with yourself,” he said.

He added that government and humanitarian support could take time to reach affected communities, making early preparations essential for families facing potential shortages.

Tueny also called for peaceful coexistence and freedom of movement within Lakes State and neighbouring areas, saying residents should be allowed to travel peacefully in search of food and other necessities.

He stressed that cooperation between communities and neighbouring authorities would be important in preventing tensions as people move to areas where food and water may be available.

The governor further warned that the northern parts of Lakes State were experiencing severe shortages of water and pasture, which he attributed partly to overgrazing.

“There is no water, and no pastures even this year,” he said, warning that livestock keepers could move their cattle towards the southern parts of Lakes State in search of grazing land.

He specifically mentioned Wulu and Mvolo counties, Terekeka County, and parts of Western Equatoria as potential destinations for livestock migration.

Tueny urged cattle keepers and community leaders to engage neighbouring communities before moving their herds to prevent disputes over water and pasture.

He said the government would work with youth and local leaders to promote peaceful livestock migration and avert possible intercommunal conflicts.

Meanwhile, Manyang Luk Lueth, the caretaker Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Agency, thanked the governor for entrusting the newly appointed officials with responsibilities in the caretaker administration.

He pledged that the team would work collectively to address security challenges, strengthen the rule of law, promote development, and maintain peace across the state.

Lueth said the government would coordinate its work across governance, economic, and service delivery sectors to fulfil its responsibilities.

The warning comes amid growing concerns about the effects of poor rainfall on agricultural production, livestock, and household food supplies in parts of South Sudan.
