The National Elections Commission (NEC) has intensified coordination with security institutions to strengthen preparations for South Sudan’s general elections scheduled for December 2026.

In a statement by NEC, the Chairperson, Gabriel Bol Deng Majok, met with the Ministry of Interior and the leadership of the South Sudan National Police Service to review election security arrangements and enhance institutional readiness ahead of the polls.

The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between electoral authorities and security institutions to ensure a safe environment for political participation and enable citizens to exercise their democratic rights without fear or intimidation.

“Deputy Minister of Interior David Marial Gumke reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to providing the necessary security environment to enable citizens to freely and safely exercise their democratic rights,” the statement read.

He said the ministry was committed to supporting arrangements that would allow citizens to participate freely and safely in the electoral process.

The engagement comes as the NEC steps up preparations for the December polls, which are expected to mark South Sudan’s first democratic general elections since gaining independence in 2011.

The commission has identified cooperation with security institutions as an important part of preparations, particularly in creating an environment in which voters, political parties, candidates, election officials, and observers can participate peacefully.

The NEC chairperson’s meeting with the interior ministry and police leadership also follows his recent official visit to South Africa, where he engaged electoral and government officials on cooperation in election management and security support.

The visit was aimed at strengthening engagement and sharing experiences that could contribute to the preparations for the upcoming elections.

Security is expected to remain a major consideration as the country approaches the December deadline, with electoral stakeholders facing the task of ensuring that the process is peaceful, inclusive, and credible.

The NEC reiterated that preparations for the December 2026 General Elections remain on track and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering peaceful, free, fair, transparent, and credible elections that reflect the will of the people of South Sudan.

The commission’s renewed engagement with security institutions underscores the importance of coordinated planning and institutional readiness in supporting a credible electoral process.

As preparations continue, the effectiveness of security arrangements will be crucial in building public confidence and ensuring that citizens can exercise their voting rights without intimidation, violence, or unnecessary restrictions.
