Over 70% of our population is under the age of 35. But when you look at the tables where decisions are made, where is the youth? When you look at the lists of political parties for the coming election, where is the youth?

This is the question we, the youth of Lainya County and South Sudan, are asking all political parties. We are not begging for sympathy. We are demanding equal representation. We are demanding a guaranteed 20% youth representation from all political parties in the coming election.

How can 70% of the population be represented by only 2% in parliament? That is not democracy. That is exclusion.

We must be the architects of peace. We fought, we suffered, and we lost education. If we are not included in leadership now, when will we be included?

Every political party uses youth to sing, to dance, to put up posters, to mobilise, and to vote. After winning, you dump the youth. That politics must stop. If you need our energy to win, you must need our brains to govern.

Service delivery has failed because the same old ideas have been recycled since 2005. The youth bring innovation, technology, and energy to deliver services to the grassroots.

Our demand to all political parties, SPLM, SPLM-IO, OPP, and others.

As we head to the upcoming elections, we demand that every political party must allocate at least 20% of all elective positions from the Payam to the national level to the youth (under 35).

Parties must include youth in party decision-making organs, not just youth leagues.

This is the voice of the youth from Juba to Yei, from Wau to Malakal, from Torit to Aweil.

If a political party does not respect the 20%, the youth will not respect its ballot box.

We are not the leaders of tomorrow. We are the leaders of today. Give us the 20%. We will deliver 100% for South Sudan.

About the author

Emmanuel Khamis Alison.

Lainya County youth leader

Disclaimer: Any opinion published on our platforms does not represent the company’s view or position.

South Sudan is the youngest nation in Africa and also the youngest in population.
