Gen. Rin Tueny Mabor with humanitarian partners operating in the state to assess the impact of the crisis on vulnerable communities.

The discussions focused on several critical sectors, including health, gender-based violence (GBV), food security and livelihoods, which have been affected by the prolonged dry spell.

The statement attributed the worsening situation to extended dry periods during the peak farming season, linked to extreme El Niño weather patterns, which have significantly disrupted crop production.

“As revealed during the discussion, the extended dry periods witnessed during the peak farming season due to extreme El Niño weather patterns have negatively affected crop production within the state,” the statement said.

The state government warned that the situation could deteriorate further without urgent intervention, raising concerns about a potential famine affecting communities across all counties of Lakes State.

Governor Mabor appealed to the international community and humanitarian organisations to provide immediate life-saving assistance to prevent the crisis from escalating.

The appeal comes as communities face growing challenges in sustaining their livelihoods amid reduced agricultural output and deteriorating grazing conditions.

The prolonged dry conditions have also affected pasture availability, creating additional pressure on pastoralists who depend on livestock for their livelihoods.

To address the shortage of pasture and water, the state government is working with authorities in Central Equatoria and Western Equatoria states to facilitate the temporary movement of pastoralists into areas where grazing grounds and water sources remain available.

The initiative is intended to help livestock owners sustain their animals while easing the pressure caused by deteriorating conditions in Lakes State.

The government has called for urgent humanitarian support as it works with partners and neighbouring state authorities to respond to the unfolding crisis and protect vulnerable households from further hardship.

By Lodu William Odiya The government of Lakes State has declared a state of disaster on humanitarian grounds following prolonged dry conditions that have affected agricultural production, livestock livelihoods and food security across the state.
