Western Equatoria State governorship aspirant Sultan Mboriman Edward Mbory has pledged to change the development trajectory of the state if he wins the upcoming election, citing security, food production, education, healthcare and infrastructure as key priorities.

Mbory, an entrepreneur and politician, declared his intention to contest for the governorship through the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party primaries at the party’s National Secretariat in Juba.

He said his political ambition was driven by a commitment to promote unity, equal treatment and development for all communities across Western Equatoria State.

“Our decision to contest is not driven by tribal allegiance or regional favouritism,” Mbory said, pledging to serve residents fairly regardless of their ethnic or regional backgrounds.

The aspirant identified human security and food security as major concerns requiring urgent attention, arguing that peace and improved agricultural production would be essential to strengthening livelihoods and promoting economic growth.

He also pledged to protect the state’s natural resources and promote their sustainable use for the benefit of present and future generations.

On social services, Mbory said his priorities included investment in quality education and healthcare, expanding opportunities for women and young people, and constructing new infrastructure while rehabilitating existing facilities.

“We embark on this journey with God’s guidance, with faith, hope of unity, and determination, to work together to build a peaceful, prosperous, and united Western Equatoria State,” he said.

Mbory concluded his declaration with a commitment to changing the state’s development direction, saying, “And yes, we are changing the narrative in Western Equatoria State.”

Western Equatoria State, with its capital in Yambio, faces challenges related to insecurity, access to public services and the need to strengthen agricultural production and economic opportunities.

As South Sudan prepares for its planned general elections on December 22, 2026, political aspirants are outlining their priorities as they seek public support. The National Elections Commission has also emphasised the importance of civic and voter education and peaceful participation in the electoral process.

Mbory’s declaration comes amid competition within the SPLM for the party’s nomination for the Western Equatoria governorship. Former state governor James El-Taib Berapai has also declared his intention to contest the party primaries.

The outcome of the SPLM primaries will determine which aspirant receives the party’s nomination to compete for the governorship in the general election.

Mbory’s proposed priorities place security, unity and socioeconomic development at the centre of his bid. However, the extent to which these pledges could be implemented would depend on the policies, resources and practical plans pursued by any government formed under his leadership.
