South Sudan\u2019s population is projected to grow from 16.4 million in 2026 to 20.3 million by 2030, according to a new report launched by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in Juba on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

This report comes during the launch of the country\u2019s population situation analysis (PSA) 2026 report to guide evidence-based national planning, stating the increase would be driven by natural increase and regional migration.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Dr. Augustino Ting Mayai, Director General of the National Bureau of Statistics, emphasised the crucial role of reliable statistics in sound decision-making.<\/p>\n

“Without timely and credible data, national planning risks being guided by assumptions rather than evidence,” Dr. Ting stated.<\/p>\n

He encouraged all concerned institutions and stakeholders to utilise the findings as the best available planning evidence until a new census is conducted.<\/p>\n

Ting emphasised that approximately 47% of the population is under the age of 15, and 79% are under 35, highlighting an urgent need for targeted investments in education, health, and youth employment.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisplacement dynamics remain structural, with three states receiving over 60% of net migration through 2030, requiring localised pre-positioning of resources and services,” Ting said.<\/p>\n

Government institutions in attendance pledged strong commitment to integrating the report’s insights into their sectoral plans and national frameworks.<\/p>\n

Partners said the report’s demographic projections will critically guide partners on resource allocation, especially where educational infrastructure like classrooms is most urgently needed and in identifying populations requiring the highest support.<\/p>\n

The NBS called on ministries, development partners, and civil society to adopt the mid-year population estimates as common denominators across all humanitarian, development, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) domains.<\/p>\n

The launch brought together government institutions, development partners, and civil society stakeholders to participate in the launch, which addresses South Sudan’s critical data landscape.<\/p>\n

With the last Population and Housing Census conducted before independence, the new report bridges vital information gaps by synthesising data from the 2021 Population Estimation Survey (PES), the 2025 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS7), administrative records, and demographic projections through 2030.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
