Juba City Council has vowed to intensify its fight against corruption after audits revealed that approximately 50 per cent of its revenue was being lost through financial leakages.<\/p>\n

Caretaker Mayor Christopher Sarafino Wani Swaka announced the findings during a press conference in Juba, describing the losses as a serious concern requiring urgent reforms.<\/p>\n

Swaka said internal and external audits had uncovered financial irregularities involving revenue collectors, administrative officers and other employees responsible for handling public funds.<\/p>\n

He explained that the investigations were conducted to identify weaknesses in the council’s revenue collection system and establish the causes of financial losses.<\/p>\n

He added that the findings had pushed the council leadership to introduce reforms aimed at strengthening financial management and preventing further losses.<\/p>\n

The mayor said the investigations had established several cases of malpractice supported by evidence, prompting the administration to take disciplinary action against those implicated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI must also say here that within the period that we were doing the studies and finding [out] what could be the problem, we found out a lot of malpractices. These are evidence-based, and today I want to report that the leadership of Juba City Council found malpractice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Swaka said the council would not tolerate financial misconduct among employees entrusted with collecting and managing public revenue.<\/p>\n

He emphasised that money collected from businesses, traders and residents must be properly accounted for and used to support the city’s operations and service delivery.<\/p>\n

The mayor’s announcement signals a renewed effort by the city administration to address corruption and strengthen accountability within its revenue collection structures.<\/p>\n

The reported financial leakages also raise concerns about the council’s ability to mobilise sufficient resources for sanitation, waste management, road maintenance and other essential urban services.<\/p>\n

Juba City Council depends on locally generated revenue to support its administrative operations and provide services to residents.<\/p>\n

The findings have therefore highlighted the importance of introducing stronger monitoring systems to ensure that all collected revenue reaches the council’s official accounts.<\/p>\n

The administration’s reform agenda is expected to focus on improving transparency, strengthening financial controls and ensuring that employees responsible for public funds are held accountable.<\/p>\n

Swaka’s announcement comes amid growing demands for improved urban services and more effective management of public resources in South Sudan’s capital.<\/p>\n
