The caretaker commissioner of Rumbek Central County, Manyiel Riak Manyiel, has handed over 30 recovered livestock to their rightful owners following the October 9 violence in Rumbek Town.

The animals, comprising two cows and 28 goats, were looted during clashes involving armed youth from the Nyang community in Rumbek Central and the Gak of the Pakam community in Rumbek North.

During the handover, Manyiel urged the Kuei, Rup and Pakam communities to return all stolen property and promote peaceful coexistence.

He said the recovery followed directives from the caretaker governor to ensure that all looted property was returned to its rightful owners.

“Whoever was robbed of his property, including cows and goats, must have it recovered and returned to the rightful owners,” Manyiel said.

He explained that individuals from Jiir Payam had looted 30 goats from Deng Nhial and Madol Akoch, adding that 28 had been recovered and returned to women from Niel-Niel.

The commissioner warned that anyone found possessing stolen property would face government investigations.

He also urged displaced women and residents from the Pakam community to return to their homes in Rumbek Town.

Manyiel said youths involved in the attack had returned to cattle camps, warning that anyone continuing to loot residential areas would be treated as a criminal.

He stressed that Rumbek belongs to all communities across the state’s eight counties and called for unity and peaceful coexistence.

Meanwhile, Laat Chol thanked government security forces for recovering 10 goats following the October 9 incident.

She said two goats remained missing but expressed hope that authorities would recover them.

Another individual who admitted keeping 14 looted goats said he acted out of anger following the killing of relatives during the attack.

He said he had returned the animals following the commissioner’s intervention and urged the Pakam community to return any cattle or goats taken during the violence.

Elizabeth Athiei Machol also welcomed the recovery, saying the attack had affected women and other residents through the loss of livestock and household property.

She confirmed that all her goats had been recovered and called for peaceful coexistence among the communities.

The handover forms part of government efforts to recover stolen property, encourage reconciliation and restore peaceful coexistence in Rumbek Town.
