The Government of Western Equatoria State, in partnership with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), has officially launched the rehabilitation of the 309-kilometre Yambio\u2013Mundri road, in a move expected to improve connectivity, trade and agricultural activities across the state.<\/p>\n

The launch was held on Monday and presided over by Western Equatoria State Caretaker Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa, alongside UNMISS Yambio Field Office Head Njoki Kinyanjui and State Minister of Roads and Bridges James Abdallah Arona.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Rimbasa thanked UNMISS for its continued support towards peace, stability and development in Western Equatoria State.<\/p>\n

He described the road rehabilitation project as an important contribution to the state’s development priorities, saying improved road infrastructure would make it easier for farmers to transport agricultural produce to markets and strengthen trade between communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cImproved road infrastructure will facilitate the movement of people and goods, strengthen agricultural production, promote trade and enhance food security,\u201d Rimbasa said.<\/p>\n

The governor said Western Equatoria has significant agricultural potential, but poor road connectivity has remained a challenge to the movement of agricultural products and the expansion of economic activities.<\/p>\n

He added that rehabilitating the Yambio\u2013Mundri road would also have security and humanitarian benefits by improving access for security personnel and humanitarian organisations operating along the corridor.<\/p>\n

According to Rimbasa, better road access could contribute to civilian protection, peaceful coexistence and the delivery of humanitarian assistance to communities.<\/p>\n

The Governor also commended UNMISS for its continued contributions to peace and civilian protection in Tambura, Yambio and other parts of Western Equatoria through Quick Impact Projects, human rights activities and community dialogue initiatives.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of the President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, and the people of Western Equatoria State, I express our appreciation to UNMISS for its continued support,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was attended by government officials, UNMISS representatives and engineers involved in the project.<\/p>\n

The Yambio\u2013Mundri road is an important transport corridor linking communities in Western Equatoria with other parts of the country. Its rehabilitation is expected to improve the movement of agricultural produce, facilitate access to essential services and create better opportunities for local businesses.<\/p>\n

Western Equatoria is among South Sudan’s major agricultural-producing states, with communities relying heavily on farming and trade for their livelihoods.<\/p>\n

However, poor road conditions, particularly during the rainy season, have often affected transportation, market access and the delivery of essential services.<\/p>\n

The rehabilitation initiative comes amid continued efforts by the state government and development partners to improve infrastructure, strengthen security and promote economic recovery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
