Three people have been killed and two others wounded in clashes involving armed youths in Malueth Payam of Rumbek North County, authorities have confirmed.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred at around 5 p.m. on Monday at Malueth Payam headquarters, where community members had gathered for a peace dialogue between the Manuer and Gak sections of the Pakam community.<\/p>\n

The caretaker commissioner of Rumbek North County, Buoi Mayek Kuc, said the clashes involved armed youths who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol.<\/p>\n

He said the victims came from communities under the same chieftaincy, raising concerns about tensions among members of the local community.<\/p>\n

“These people are from the same Boma under one sub-chief and executive chief identified as Makol Chadhan,” Kuc said.<\/p>\n

The commissioner said he had instructed local chiefs to identify and present those responsible within seven days for investigation.<\/p>\n

He also blamed alcohol consumption for contributing to the violence, warning that the brewing and sale of locally produced alcohol would no longer be tolerated.<\/p>\n

“My message to the people of Rumbek North County is that I don’t want anybody to sell alcohol,” he said.<\/p>\n

Kuc alleged that some armed youths mix yeast and ginger to produce locally brewed alcohol, which he said contributed to the incident.<\/p>\n

He further directed Payam administrators to ensure that anyone found possessing the materials or involved in brewing alcohol is taken into custody for three months.<\/p>\n

The commissioner said the violence occurred while he was present at the Payam headquarters attending the peace dialogue between the Manuer and Gak sections.<\/p>\n

He identified the groups involved as brothers from Pan Adieng and Payueth, who fall under the same chieftaincy.<\/p>\n

Kuc also referred to a separate exchange of gunfire involving members of the Pajong sub-clan, describing it as an isolated incident that had been confirmed by the local chief.<\/p>\n

He said the situation had since returned to normal, adding that there were no further attacks between the communities.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Daniel Laat Kon, chairperson of the Civil Society Organisations Network in Lakes State, condemned the killings and called for government intervention.<\/p>\n

He urged authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.<\/p>\n

“As civil society organisations, we condemn this tragic incident, which claimed lives, in the strongest terms possible. We are asking the government to engage the community and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Kon said.<\/p>\n

He also appealed to the families of the deceased to allow the authorities to handle the case through established legal procedures.<\/p>\n

Kon identified the proliferation of small arms and alcohol consumption among armed youths as major concerns contributing to recurring violence in the state.<\/p>\n

He called on the government to intensify disarmament efforts and regulate the sale and consumption of locally brewed and commercially produced alcohol.<\/p>\n

He argued that addressing the availability of firearms and alcohol could help reduce violence, particularly when armed individuals become intoxicated.<\/p>\n

“The government needs to come in and regulate the consumption of local alcohol and other alcohol being sold and locally brewed,” he said.<\/p>\n

Kon further urged authorities to strengthen civilian protection and increase vigilance across Lakes State as the country approaches its scheduled general elections.<\/p>\n
