Activist and CEPO Executive Director Edmond Yakani has challenged South Sudan’s leadership to explain the growing contradiction between the reported shortage of cash in commercial banks and the availability of South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) for sale on the streets of Juba.<\/p>\n

Yakani expressed concern that civil servants and soldiers are being informed that their salaries have been deposited into their personal bank accounts, only to encounter difficulties when attempting to withdraw the money.<\/p>\n

According to him, some employees are either told that banks have no available liquidity or are given less money than they are entitled to withdraw.<\/p>\n

“Why do we have enough liquid SSP on the streets of Juba for sale and purchase but no liquid money of equal amount in commercial banks to pay civil servants and soldiers their salaries?” Yakani questioned.<\/p>\n

He questioned how the national currency can become readily available for commercial transactions on the streets while the institutions responsible for distributing salaries cannot provide sufficient cash to account holders.<\/p>\n

The CEPO chief warned that the situation raises serious concerns about cash circulation and the handling of the country’s monetary resources.<\/p>\n

He suggested that individuals could be holding substantial amounts of physical cash outside the formal banking system, calling on the government to investigate possible hoarding and establish where the money is going.<\/p>\n

“Something is wrong somewhere. Somebody somewhere is undermining the presence of liquid money in the Central Bank and commercial banks by keeping this money at home,” Yekani said.<\/p>\n

He further warned that the continued shortage of physical currency could become a major obstacle to economic stability, particularly for workers whose livelihoods depend on monthly salaries.<\/p>\n

Yakani appealed to the country’s leadership to take concrete action rather than allow the situation to continue without clear answers.<\/p>\n

The government and relevant financial institutions are now being challenged to explain why the national currency appears accessible to traders but remains difficult for ordinary account holders to obtain through the banking system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
