South Sudan and Uganda reaffirm strong bilateral ties

By Sabri Dibaco

The minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation of South Sudan, Monday Semaya Kumba, received the Ugandan minister for foreign affairs for regional cooperation, John Mulimba, at his office in Juba after his arrival on Monday.

In a press release from the office of the minister of foreign affairs, they discussed matters that focused on strengthening the longstanding bilateral relations and partnership between South Sudan and Uganda; both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation across key sectors.

“During the bilateral talks in the office of the minister, he exchanged views on matters of mutual interest, including border trade, economic cooperation, and the importance of sustained high-level engagements between the two countries,” the statement partly read.

Kumba briefed his Ugandan counterpart on the current political developments in the country, along with other issues of shared concern.

Mulimba expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded to him and his delegation. He emphasised the importance of continued collaboration to advance common priorities and strengthen regional integration.

The meeting reflects the enduring ties between Juba and Kampala, as both nations seek to enhance cooperation for mutual development and stability.

“South Sudan and Uganda have been long partners when it comes to economic cooperation, which has played a great role in supporting the country during and after its struggle for independence in 2011, and both countries have maintained their close diplomatic ties with frequent high-level visits and cooperation,” the statement continued.

Uganda has supported South Sudan in security matters, including military assistance during times of internal conflict and collaboration on border security to combat smuggling, armed groups, and cross-border crimes.

The cooperation between South Sudan and Uganda is strategic and mutually beneficial. Uganda provides economic support and access to markets; on the other hand, South Sudan offers opportunities for trade and investment.
