CES government emphasize collective efforts in road maintenance

By Lodu William Odiya

The National Minister of Roads and Bridges, Peter Lam Both, alongside Central Equatoria State (CES) authorities, has emphasised the importance of collective effort in a new city-wide road maintenance initiative.

According to a statement from the CES State Press Unit, the maintenance project conducted by the Juba City Council in conjunction with the National Ministry of Roads and Bridges has officially commenced at Juba University.

The initial phase also includes repair work on the Hai Thoura-Buluk Road as part of a broader plan to rehabilitate key infrastructure within the capital.

Minister Peter Lam commended the state government, under the leadership of Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony, for its high level of cooperation with the national ministry.

He noted that continued collaboration between the two tiers of government is essential for delivering durable, high-standard road networks.

Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony issued a firm statement calling for unified efforts to keep the city’s roads clean and functional. His directives included:

With the renewed ban on littering and the dumping of waste in drainage systems, road encroachment, and blockage of waterways, quarter councils have been directed to work closely with the Juba City Council to maintain security and cleanliness in residential neighborhoods.

The governor reiterated the state government’s commitment to reclaiming public spaces, warning that violators of these regulations will be held accountable.

The mayor of Juba City Council described the maintenance works as a vital service delivery milestone. He advocated for increased budget planning to ensure roads within Juba are built and maintained to international standards.

Addressing the public, the mayor urged citizens, business owners, and restaurant operators to take pride in their infrastructure.

He specifically warned against the dumping of rubbish in drains—a major cause of road degradation—and indicated that strict public order measures will be enforced to prevent such actions.

“Sustained maintenance, community cooperation, and strict enforcement are necessary to keep roads serviceable and prevent flooding during the rainy season,” the statement concluded.

Residents and business owners in Hai Thoura have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the renovations will improve daily transit and commerce.

Officials have confirmed that the program will be extended to other parts of Juba to ensure comprehensive renovation across the city.
