Parents must guide children against drug abuse and criminal activities

The increasing involvement of young people in drug abuse and criminal activities has become a growing concern in the country.

Cases of theft, violence, gang activities, and substance abuse are becoming more common in towns and communities.

This alarming trend threatens the future of the nation because the youth are the backbone of any society.

Parents, therefore, have a major responsibility to guide and protect their children from destructive behaviours.

The family is the first school of every child. It is within the home that children learn discipline, respect, honesty, and responsibility.

When parents fail to guide their children properly, young people can easily be influenced by bad peer groups and harmful habits.

Some children spend most of their time on the streets without supervision, exposing them to drugs, criminal gangs, and other dangerous activities.

Drug abuse among the youth is particularly worrying. Some young people are becoming addicted to alcohol, marijuana, and other harmful substances at a very early age.

Drug abuse destroys health, affects mental stability, and pushes many youths into criminal acts such as robbery and violence.

A child under the influence of drugs often loses focus in school and may become a burden to the family and society.

Parents must therefore pay close attention to the behaviour of their children. They should know the kind of friends their children associate with and monitor their movements.

Open communication between parents and children is also important. Many children fall into bad activities because they lack guidance, love, and advice at home.

Parents should create time to listen to their children and educate them about the dangers of drugs and crime.

At the same time, parents should encourage children to engage in productive activities such as education, sports, religious programs, and vocational training.

When young people are occupied with meaningful activities, they are less likely to engage in crime or substance abuse.

Communities, schools, churches, and local leaders must also work together to support positive moral values among the youth.

The government should strengthen laws against drug trafficking and increase awareness campaigns on the dangers of drug abuse.

Counselling and rehabilitation programs should also be made available for affected youth so they can recover and become responsible citizens again.

A peaceful and productive society begins with responsible parenting. Parents cannot leave the upbringing of their children entirely to schools or the government.

They must take active roles in shaping the character and future of the next generation.

If South Sudan is to build a better future, families must stand firm against drug abuse and criminal activities.

Guiding children with discipline, love, and moral values today will help create responsible citizens and a safer nation tomorrow.

God protect South Sudan
