Kiir calls for peace, reconciliation during SPLA anniversary

By Sabri Dibaco

Thousands of members, veterans, and supporters of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement gathered at Juba National Stadium on Thursday to mark the 43rd anniversary of the SPLM/SPLA liberation struggle founded on May 16, 1983.

The celebration was marked by patriotic songs, cultural performances, and artistic displays from various South Sudanese groups, showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage while promoting messages of unity, peace, and national development.

Addressing the gathering, President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who also chairs the SPLM, paid tribute to the men and women who launched the liberation struggle, praising their sacrifices and contributions toward achieving freedom and sovereignty for the people of South Sudan.

Kiir reaffirmed the SPLM’s commitment to the principles of the May 16 revolution, including safeguarding peace, strengthening national unity, and advancing democratic governance.

He said the government remains committed to development priorities aimed at improving the lives of citizens through the provision of basic social services, economic empowerment, and other essential needs.

On his part, Vice President Dr. James Wani Igga urged South Sudanese to draw lessons from the solidarity demonstrated during the liberation struggle, emphasising that lasting peace, reconciliation, and unity are essential for building a stable and prosperous nation.

Despite the celebratory atmosphere in Juba, the event drew mixed reactions from some citizens and civil servants who have reportedly gone more than six months without salaries amid rising food prices and increasing living costs.

Some residents also observed that the celebrations were largely concentrated in the capital, with few or no similar commemorations taking place in other states across the country.
