Yei health authorities heighten Ebola surveillance amid DR Congo outbreak

By James Innocent

‎Health authorities in Yei River County have urged residents to remain vigilant following reports of an Ebola outbreak in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

County health officials say the outbreak in eastern Congo has raised concerns because of the close border connections between the DRC and South Sudan. Authorities emphasised the need for preventive measures and public awareness to reduce the risk of the virus spreading into Yei River County.

The Director of Health in Yei River County, Simon Musoga, said preparedness efforts have been intensified at border entry points, particularly in Lasu Payam along the South Sudan–DRC border.

“We are increasing screening and surveillance measures because of the movement of people across the border. Ebola is a dangerous disease, and the community must remain alert and cooperate with health workers,” Musoga said.

He added that health workers have been deployed to monitor travellers crossing between Congo and South Sudan and to conduct public awareness campaigns on Ebola prevention and symptoms.

Musoga further called on the national government to strengthen border control measures to prevent possible importation of the virus into the country.

Meanwhile, a senior resident of Yei, Ale Satimon, commended the county health department for raising public awareness about Ebola preparedness.

He said community members are ready to support prevention efforts and are awaiting the formation of an official task force to coordinate response activities in the county.

Health officials continue to encourage residents to observe proper hygiene measures, report suspected cases immediately, and avoid unnecessary cross-border movement as authorities closely monitor the situation.
