Korok community association cancels elections

By Hou Akot Hou

The Korok Community Association of Aweil North County has cancelled the election as a result of immense tensions among supporters of those vying for the positions.

In a letter written by the chairperson of the Korok Association’s Electoral Committee, irregularities had made them worry about negative consequences associated with the election if allowed to take place on Saturday last week.

The Electoral Committee chairperson called the electorates to wait for an appropriate period.

“Dear members and the general public, on behalf of the greater Korok Community Association in Juba, we regret to inform you about the postponement based on the directives received from the coordination office that the Electoral Committee should announce the postponement of the upcoming greater Korok Community elections,” the statement partly read.

Those vying for the president of the association are Larson Angok Garang and Angony Lual.

The electoral committee called for calm and the restoration of peace in the association.

“This decision has not been taken lightly. The Electoral Committee tries their best to conduct free, fair, and transparent elections that reflect the true will of the people of the greater Korok Community,” the statement added.

The electoral committee said that due to unforeseen circumstances, the coordination office in Juba urges the appropriate measures to be adhered to.

“The electoral committee remains committed to maintaining open communication with the public through this process. Further information regarding the rescheduled election date, timelines, and related procedures will be communicated promptly once confirmed by the coordination office.

The electoral officials appreciated the understanding and patience of all community members during the period of the halt of the elections for the president of the greater Korok, as it is hoped that the successful election will take place.
