The Commissioner of Yei River County, Samuel Henry Malimbo, has called for stronger coordination among health partners and government institutions as efforts to enhance Ebola preparedness continue across the county.
Speaking during a meeting with a UNICEF delegation, Malimbo commended the organisation for supporting local authorities in raising awareness about Ebola prevention and preparedness.
The commissioner noted that Yei River County’s proximity to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo places the area at increased risk, making preparedness measures essential.
”Ebola is not only a public health concern but also a national security issue because of its potential impact on communities, economic activities, and public services,” Malimbo said.
He directed health authorities to strengthen surveillance and establish screening points at strategic entry routes to ensure travellers comply with preventive measures and to reduce the risk of cross-border transmission.
Malimbo also urged development partners and humanitarian organisations to coordinate closely with county and state authorities to improve information sharing and effective response mechanisms.
The commissioner further emphasised the importance of transparency and cooperation among partners operating in the county, saying coordinated efforts are necessary to safeguard the well-being of the people of Yei River County.
While UNICEF representative Florence Logu said the organisation is supporting the county through social and behavioral change initiatives aimed at increasing public awareness of Ebola preparedness and prevention.
She explained that UNICEF will work through community networks and social mobilisation structures to disseminate information on Ebola prevention. Local radio stations will also be used to broadcast awareness jingles and public health messages to reach wider audiences.
The UNICEF delegation was accompanied by the Director of Health for Yei River County, Simon Musoga, who said the visit forms part of ongoing Ebola preparedness activities in the county.
Musoga noted that UNICEF’s involvement will strengthen community outreach efforts and support local health teams in delivering awareness messages to residents and relevant committees.
He thanked UNICEF for partnering with county authorities and communities in efforts to prevent and respond to any potential Ebola outbreak.
The meeting forms part of broader efforts by health authorities and development partners to strengthen Ebola preparedness and protect communities across Yei River County.
