The Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) has issued Circular No. 06/2026, directing all associations registered under the Commission to strictly refrain from engaging in political activities.
According to the circular, the directive is aimed at ensuring that registered associations operate within their legal mandates and maintain neutrality in line with the regulations governing civil society and humanitarian organisations in South Sudan.
“This serves to formally notify all associations registered by the relief and rehabilitation commission under the NGOs Act 2016 in the Republic of South Sudan to refrain from political activities in the country and adhere to their humanitarian mandates to serve the communities,” the statement reads
The RRC emphasised that associations registered with the Commission are expected to focus on their stated objectives, including humanitarian assistance, development work, community empowerment, and other non-political activities.
“The NGOs registered are guided by principles governing voluntary and humanitarian work under Chapter 2, section 6, of the NGOs Act 2016. The articles stipulated in the NGOs Act 2016 are clearly spelt out,” the statement read in part
The Commission warned that involvement in partisan politics, political campaigns, endorsements, or activities that could compromise organisational neutrality would constitute a violation of registration requirements.
The circular further noted that organisations found engaging in political activities may face administrative measures, including suspension or other actions in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations.
The RRC called upon all registered associations to comply fully with the directive and uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and non-partisanship in their operations.
The latest directive comes as authorities seek to strengthen regulatory oversight of civil society organisations and ensure that humanitarian and development actors maintain their independence and credibility while serving communities across the country.
