Yei commissioner urges parents to help curb youth gang activities

By James Innocent

The commissioner of Yei River County, Samuel Henry Malimbo, has called on parents and guardians to take a more active role in guiding their children away from gang-related activities and criminal behaviour in the town.

Speaking during funeral prayers for respected Yei elder Paul Kuba, who passed away in Lasu Payam, Commissioner Malimbo said addressing gang activities requires a collective effort involving both the government and local communities. He stressed that insecurity and criminal incidents cannot be effectively tackled by authorities alone without the support and cooperation of residents.

“The responsibility of combating gang activities lies with both the government and the community,” Malimbo said. “Parents must closely monitor and advise their children to avoid joining criminal groups that threaten peace and stability.”

The commissioner further noted that the presence of armed individuals in some parts of the county continues to contribute to insecurity. He called for stronger cooperation between citizens and security agencies in identifying and reporting criminal activities.

He urged residents to promptly report suspicious behaviour and criminal activity, emphasising that discipline and proper guidance are essential to shaping responsible young people.

“If young people are not properly guided and disciplined, they may become involved in harmful activities that affect both their future and the wider community,” he added.

Community elder Antony Dicko echoed the commissioner’s concerns, urging parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s welfare.

He observed that some young people have been drawn into groups commonly referred to as gangs, exposing them to criminal behaviour and violence.

Dicko called for stronger family support systems, community mentorship, and youth-focused programs to help young people make positive life choices.

Local leaders and residents have continued to express concern over rising cases of youth involvement in gangs, with increasing calls for community awareness campaigns and preventive measures to address the challenge and promote lasting peace and security in Yei.
