Police in Twic County, Warrap State, have detained a 25-year-old driver following the death of a passenger who fell from a moving vehicle.
The incident is said to have occurred on Tuesday morning in Malual-Tor, Turalei Payam, in Warrap State.
According to the director of traffic police in Twic County, Kur Mabuoc Aruop, the incident occurred at around 10:00 a.m. as the vehicle was travelling from Turalei Payam to Ajak-Kuach Payam.
The deceased, who was reportedly sitting on top of goods loaded onto the vehicle, fell off and died at the scene.
Mr. Mabuoc said the driver is being held by police while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
“The driver has been detained because he is accused of allowing the passenger to sit on top of the cargo. During the journey, the passenger fell from the moving vehicle and died instantly. The incident has shocked the local community,” Mabuoc said.
He added that the accident left other passengers shaken as police began questioning the driver over the circumstances that led to the fatality.
According to preliminary information gathered by investigators, the deceased may have chosen to sit on top of the cargo, where he lost his balance and fell from the moving vehicle.
“He suffered a severe neck injury after falling. Residents responded immediately, but he died at the scene,” Mabuoc explained.
The traffic police director urged motorists and passengers to observe road safety measures, particularly during the rainy season when many roads in Warrap State become difficult to navigate.
He warned against travelling in unsafe positions, including sitting on top of loaded cargo, and called on drivers to ensure all passengers are transported safely.
He also appealed to motorists to avoid speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol, noting that reckless driving, poor road conditions, and negligence continue to contribute to fatal road accidents in the area.
Police say investigations are ongoing, and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings.
