WES governor urges holdout armed groups to return home

By Louis Loku

Western Equatoria State Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa has appealed to holdout armed groups, including forces loyal to Futuyo, to abandon armed struggle, return home, and embrace peace, dialogue, and reconciliation.

Speaking during celebrations marking South Sudan’s 15th Independence Anniversary in Yambio on Wednesday, Governor Badagbu said the state remains committed to restoring lasting peace and called on those still in the bush to take advantage of the government’s offer of amnesty.

The governor urged members of armed groups to return to civilian life and contribute to the development and stability of Western Equatoria State, stressing that continued violence only prolongs suffering and hinders progress.

“People cannot continue to live in conflict. The time has come for everyone to choose peace, set clear goals, and work together to protect our state,” Governor Badagbu said.

Addressing Futuyo and other armed groups directly, he assured them they would be welcomed back if they laid down their weapons.

“We are ready to receive you. We will provide amnesty so that political peace can be sustained. Let us choose dialogue, reconciliation, and unity for the future of our people,” he added.

The governor also used the occasion to encourage citizens to participate peacefully in the country’s upcoming general elections, urging aspiring leaders to seek public support through democratic means rather than violence.

He emphasised that leadership should be determined through the ballot box, calling on political actors and communities to reject conflict and respect the will of the people.

Governor Badagbu further appealed to residents across Western Equatoria State to safeguard the peace achieved through years of sacrifice and to remain united in advancing development.

South Sudan celebrated its 15th Independence Anniversary on July 9 under the theme of peace, unity, and nation-building, with leaders across the country renewing calls for reconciliation and peaceful coexistence ahead of the anticipated elections.
