POLITICS: In-Opposition party denies endorsing President Kiir

By Louis Loku

The In-Opposition party has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging it has endorsed President Salva Kiir Mayardit for the presidency in the forthcoming general election.

In a press statement issued on Monday by the IO National Committee for Information and Communication, the party described the claims as false and misleading, saying they do not reflect its official position.

The statement, issued under the authority of the IO Interim Leadership led by Hon. Stephen Par Kuol, specifically refuted reports attributed to Lich TV that claimed the party had backed President Kiir for re-election.

“The information is false and does not reflect the position of the Party,” the statement said.

According to the IO, the interim leadership has neither announced its electoral strategy nor endorsed any candidate for the presidency or any other elective office ahead of the expected 2026 elections.

The party emphasised that, in accordance with its constitution and established procedures, it will convene its National Convention before the general elections. During the convention, delegates will democratically deliberate and endorse candidates for the various elective positions.

The opposition movement further reaffirmed its commitment to conducting its affairs through constitutional organs and institutional procedures, urging members, supporters, media organisations, and the general public to rely only on official party communications.

The statement comes amid growing political activity as South Sudan prepares for its anticipated general elections, with political parties beginning internal consultations and positioning themselves ahead of the polls.
